Students can work individually on this research task - they will need a computer with sound and internet access.
- You are going to listen music by the composer who wrote the music for the James Bond film ‘Casino Royale’ and the TV series ‘Little Britain’.
- From the list at the bottom of the page, play a piece from the most recent Bond film ‘Casino Royale’, composed by David Arnold.
- Now read through the following short case study which provides you with some more information about this prolific ‘working’ composer.
- How does he make a living: What does the work of a composer involve?
How does he get paid royalties for what he does?
David Arnold is a composer and producer who has written film music for a number of box-office hits, including ‘Independence Day’, ‘Stargate’, and ‘Stepford Wives’. He has also written the music for several James Bond films. David is also a successful record producer, having worked with artists such as Garbage, Björk, k.d. lang, Damien Rice, M People, and others. He is able to make a living commercially because copyright protection ensures he is fairly paid for his work, and no one can use it without his permission.
- Listen to the podcast by composer David Arnold about the role of copyright.
- What else does this tell you about the composer’s role?
- Make notes to report back to the group.
