Copyright Info

Teachers' notes:
Explain that copyright exists as soon as a piece of original work is created – as long as it has been written down or recorded in some way. The formal date of when the work was created should be recorded (to use in legal arguments, if required) by sending a recording or a copy of the work to oneself by registered post, and leaving the envelope unopened in a safe place (that they should remember!).

Task 2

  • Watch the following video which explains the role of collecting societies in regards to copyright:

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

  • Using the Creative Portfolio table and working individually/ in pairs/ small groups pupils should be encouraged to keep a record of all their original works (online or offline) made in or out of school, making a note of the titles and the dates.  This could be useful for the Arts Council Arts Awards Scheme.

NOTE: Your music/compositions may be a collaborative effort working with others. In this case students need to  be clear about who contributed what to the composition i.e. who wrote the lyrics /melody, or whether it is a genuine joint effort.

There is specific mention of this issue in the ‘copyright’ video on QSM site http://www.young-enterprise.org.uk/qsmusic/themes.htm. Pupils should learn and understand why it is important to keep a record of this detail.
